WiFi security startup Cloak acquired by StackPath, will expand beyond Apple to Android and Windows

osx-cloakedStealthy Dallas-based startup StackPath has acquired Cloak, the Seattle VPN provider that focuses on no-hassle secure WiFi connections for Mac and iOS devices. Cloak plans to remain in Seattle, and will expand its service to additional platforms following the acquisition.

Cloak, which was a GeekWire App of the Year nominee back in 2014, will continue on as a standalone service for now, along with some welcome additions. With the acquisition, Clock announced today that it’s working on native apps for Android and Windows users, as well as a Cloak for Teams service for centralized billing.

“As we’ve grown we’ve found that many of our best users are actually employees at [small and medium businesses], and there’s a lot more we can do to serve those companies down the road,” Cloak co-founder Dave Peck said.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Cloak was launched back in 2011 by a trio of Microsoft veterans: Peck, Peter Sagerson and Nick Robinson, who had worked on the software giant’s Mac apps. They bootstrapped the company, without taking outside funding, building a VPN tool that engages automatically when logging into public WiFi networks, where internet traffic is most vulnerable.

“When we started Cloak, nobody else had really nailed the ‘zero configuration, it just works’ design and that helped us stand out,” Peck said. “These days, Cloak has tons of features (like auto-secure and trusted network management, and our OverCloak fire-walling feature) that the competition has yet to match.”

Peck said StackPath is a good fit for both the Cloak product line and the team. In fact, Cloak heavily uses SoftLayer, a technology created by StackPath founder Lance Crosby, who sold SoftLayer to IBM in 2013.

“The team Lance is building at StackPath has deep business, networking, and security expertise: the very expertise we’ll need to take on our ambitious future plans for Cloak,” Peck said.

Peck and Sagerson, who focus on engineering for Cloak, will continue on with StackPath while remaining in Seattle. Robinson, the only other member of the Cloak team, is leaving the company. However, the company plans on hiring new staff as it expands its product line.

Cloak pricing remains the same, with a 5GB per month plan starting at $ 2.99. Teams can also sign up for the Cloak for Teams beta by emailing Cloak here.
