Upcycling, while still a niche, is gaining popularity as consumers become more environmentally conscious. The trend involves repurposing waste into new and improved products that can be used or sold. Upcycling gained enough momentum by 2014 to warrant its own reality show, but the industry was much more of a gamble when Upmod launched in 2011. The Snoqualmie, Wash.-based startup decided to capitalize on the trend early with its online marketplace for upcycling artisans.
